Silver has been known as a worthy metal especially by the Mediterranean coastal countries since 4000 B.C. (2) Antibacterial effects of silver ions have been known for centuries. (2)

Today, silver is used in the lots of areas leading Aviation, Electronic and Telecommunication since its ohmage is low.(2) As regard as healthcare, silver is used commonly in the area of dentistry. In this field, we can see silver as a component of fillings. Nowadays, preparates including silver are used especially at burns as topically. Preparates which include silver at high concentration are used as cauterisant.
Silver is an oligodynamic metal. In other words, it allows spontaneous emission of the ions which are on its surface and these ions are antibacterial. On the other hand; copper, zinc and gold have oligodynamic characteristics however because of theirs’ costs and toxic characteristics, they are not as advantageous as silver.

Silver; makes sulfhydrly enzymes inactive and makes them compund with amino, imidazole, carboxyl and phosphate groups.(2) It prevents mitosis by annuling DNA replication especially at eukaryote through its this characteristics. With a study on P. Aeruginosa, it has been determined that silver had stopped the replication by attaching to DNAs of bacterium cells which are at phase of logarithmic reproduction. (9)

Silver causes swelling of cell by annuling selective permeability of cellular membrane and causes necrosis in the end. (5)

Besides, silver reacts on proteins which are in propriodentium and bone tissue and this condition annuls standard milieu for bacterium reproduction. (8)

With a study on E.coli, it has been seen that silver affects cell’s energy metabolism by avarting glucose, glycerole, fumarate, succinate, D-lactat and oxidation of D-lactat(6). With another study, it has been also seen that silver inhibits enzyme of B-galactosidase(7) and in this way it causes necrosis. Namely, silver is both bactericidal and bacteriostatic.
Following the silver coating with Sol-Gel method, it has been projected that volume of silver changes by 2mg to 5mg in total. Even in case that the entire volume of silver rapidly involves the circulation in body, it will not possible that silver level in blood can reach a toxic level that will cause acute or chronic argyria.
